Mangaldas Chokhawala decided to start the Toor Dal manufacturing plant at Navapur in Maharashtra, near the Gujarat border. This was an area producing desi toor dal. The unit was started in 1935.
South Gujarat was the hotbed of the freedom struggle with the Bardoli Satyagraha and Dandi March. It was a unanimous decision that ‘RENTIO’ should be the brand name as the spinning wheel or rentio was the symbol of Swadeshi.
Vipinchandra Chokhawala who carried forward this legacy was well ware of the adulteration of pulses in the unorganised market. Under his watch, RENTIO Foods introduced packed Toor Dal in 1982 with packing bag of 1 KG, 2K, 5 KG and 10 KG, a pioneering initiative to develop packaged lentils in India.
RENTIO completed 90 years in April 2025 and is still a leading name in the dal market.
